I Took Care of My Sick Mother Until Her Last Breath, but in the End Her Will Left Me With Nothing — Story of the Day

I was driving to my late mother’s house, still grieving her loss. The funeral had just passed, and now I had to deal with the practical tasks left behind, like always being the responsible one in the family.
I had cared for Mom during her illness, certain she’d leave the house to me. Not Phoebe. She was unpredictable and couldn’t handle things the way I could, though I still worried about her.
Dan, smelling of alcohol, sat beside me in the car. I was on edge, ready to snap. We arrived at the house, where the lawyer waited outside. When we couldn’t get in, I called Phoebe, but her phone was off.
Soon, Phoebe showed up, disheveled and looking like she hadn’t slept. Inside, the lawyer read the will, and to my shock, Mom left everything to Phoebe. I was furious. Dan yelled at Phoebe, and she ran outside.
I followed Phoebe to the backyard, where I suggested she sell me the house for her flower shop. She refused, and we argued. I felt like I’d been overlooked while Phoebe got everything, but she reminded me that I had everything, even if I didn’t appreciate it.
Dan pushed me to fight Phoebe over the house, but I discovered he was deep in debt, mostly from gambling. He’d hoped selling the house would fix everything, but I wasn’t willing to sacrifice Phoebe’s inheritance for his mistakes.
Later, I visited Phoebe again and apologized for my actions. She shared how she always felt overshadowed by me, and I admitted Mom had always favored her. We made peace, and I decided to leave Dan, help Phoebe with her shop, and take the job abroad.
Phoebe assured me she’d be fine, and we hugged, both knowing it was time for us to move on.
