I Took Care of My Sick Mother Until Her Last Breath, but in the End Her Will Left Me With Nothing — Story of the Day

I was driving to my late mother’s house, still weighed down by her passing. The funeral was over, and now I had to handle everything, just like I did when she was ill. I’d cared for her, so I expected the house to go to me, not Phoebe, my complicated and distant sister.

Dan, sitting next to me, smelled of alcohol despite promising to stop. When we arrived, the lawyer was waiting outside. The house was locked, and Phoebe wasn’t there. After calling her, I learned her phone was off.

Inside, the lawyer read the will. I was shocked when he said, “The house and assets go to Phoebe.” Dan exploded, but Phoebe ran outside. I followed, offering to buy the house, but she refused, saying Mom left it to her. We argued, with Phoebe accusing me of having everything while she had nothing.

Later, I discovered Dan’s gambling debts were why he pushed me to fight Phoebe. Confronting him, I realized the truth. I then went to Phoebe, told her about the debts, and offered to sell the house and split the money. But Phoebe insisted, “It’s yours, Katherine. Mom wanted you to have it.”

We had a heart-to-heart, and I decided to leave Dan, support Phoebe’s flower shop, and take the job abroad. Phoebe reassured me, and we hugged, knowing we’d be okay.
