My Ex Asked the Court to Stop Child Support So He Could Buy His New Wife a Car — He Wasn’t Ready for What I Did

My ex asked me to pause child support for six months so his wife could buy a new car. “You don’t really need the money anyway,” he added.

Instead of arguing, I told him we’d talk at our son’s next drop-off. When I arrived, I handed him a letter saying that if he stopped contributing financially, he would take on full-time parenting for those six months—including school, medical care, and everyday expenses.

His smile vanished. He protested, but three days later, he admitted he “couldn’t manage” because his wife was stressed. The following week, he sent the full child support payment and asked to restore our regular custody schedule.

Then his wife messaged me. She hadn’t requested a new car and knew nothing about his plan.

He’d framed child support as money I could spare—until he faced the daily responsibilities it helped cover.
