On the Way Home from Kindergarten, My Grandson Told Me Mom and Dad Had a Secret Even the Cops Couldn’t Know About – I Laughed at First, but by the Time He Finished, I Raced to My Daughter’s House

When my five-year-old grandson Noah whispered that his parents were hiding a secret “even the police can’t know,” I laughed. Then he said it involved me, and I drove straight to my daughter Emma’s house.
Inside her garage was a birthday display of old photographs. Emma had bought my former camera at a flea market and developed the film inside. But I hadn’t lost that camera, as I’d always claimed. I’d abandoned it forty years earlier after believing my boyfriend Stephen had betrayed me.
Emma had also invited the seller to dinner. When Stephen arrived, he asked me to examine the photographs together. The image I’d mistaken for him kissing my friend Selena was part of an innocent picnic sequence. I’d ended our relationship without letting him explain.
Then Stephen learned Emma was forty.
“Could she be my daughter?” he asked.
I admitted I’d discovered my pregnancy after leaving him—and never told him.
“You decided that for both of us,” Emma said.
I couldn’t defend my choice. Stephen gave her space, and she agreed to dinner on one condition: she would ask her own questions. This time, I listened.
