My Neighbor Moved Our Fence Six Inches Onto My Property While I Was Away – What I Found Buried Beneath It Stopped Me Cold

When I returned from a trip to Chicago, my landscaper noticed that our shared fence had been moved six inches onto my property. My neighbor Gary blamed a contractor, but every post had been reset in a straight line. Then I found freshly disturbed soil beside a flowering bush and dug up a metal box engraved with his late wife Ellen’s name.
Gary admitted he had moved the fence while I was away. Ellen had loved looking at that bush, and he had buried a box of her keepsakes beside it so the spot would appear to be on his side. But inside the box was a letter from Ellen asking him to do something much simpler: ask me for a cutting to plant in his own yard.
I understood why the place mattered to him, but I told him the fence had to go back. Gary paid to restore it, and I gave him two cuttings. One survived. By the following spring, it had bloomed beside Ellen’s box on his side of the fence.
