My Neighbor Cut Down Roses I’d Grown for 15 Years Before the Garden Club Judging – Three Days Later, Boxes Appeared Where They’d Grown

For 15 years, my roses were the one thing I’d built for myself after my divorce. Then, the night before the neighborhood garden contest, someone hacked all 12 bushes down to stumps. I suspected my rival, Frank, but had no proof.

Three days later, wooden boxes appeared beside the ruined flower bed. Inside were photographs of my roses and letters from Frank’s late wife, Carol. During her illness, she had watched my garden from her window. In her final letter, she wrote, “I hope Diane never stops growing them.”

When I confronted Frank, he admitted he had destroyed the roses. Seeing them bloom year after year without Carol had become unbearable. He apologized and offered to replace them, but I told him he couldn’t replace 15 years of care—or undo what he’d destroyed for Carol, too.

Weeks later, I found new shoots on three of the damaged bushes. I rebuilt the garden, and the following spring, I gave Frank a cutting from the surviving coral rose to plant beneath Carol’s window. It didn’t erase what he’d done, but that summer, a single coral flower bloomed where she used to sit.
