I was closing the neighborhood pharmacy when a woman rushed in with a feverish baby. She had no money and promised to pay the next day. I knew I could get in trouble for giving her the medicine, but I couldn’t turn her away. As she left, she smiled and said, “You’ll understand soon.”

The next morning, my boss urgently told me to check the security footage. My stomach dropped.
