My sister Lauren asked me to watch her seven-year-old son, Oliver, for one night. The next morning, he asked, “Are we staying with you now?” His bag held a week’s worth of clothes, his school uniform, medicine, and his night-light. When I called Lauren, she didn’t answer.
She finally arrived that evening and admitted she wanted Oliver to stay with me for weeks while she moved in with her boyfriend, Daniel. His apartment was small, and he wasn’t ready to live with a child. Lauren was struggling with money and had convinced herself I could give Oliver a better life. But she had told him I’d already agreed—and that he had to behave so I wouldn’t change my mind.
Oliver had spent the day trying to prove he deserved a home. When Lauren realized how frightened she’d made him, she told him the truth and apologized. He told her he liked visiting me, but he wanted to go home with her.
