My Brother-in-Law Stayed Five Days and Left Our Apartment a Mess – I Stopped My Husband from Calling Him Because I Had a Better Idea

My husband and I let his brother Greg stay in our Chicago apartment while we were away for five days. When we returned, the kitchen was full of dirty dishes and garbage, ants were crawling near the trash, and our coffee machine was broken. Dan wanted to call and confront him immediately, but I asked him to invite Greg back for dinner.

Before we cleaned up, I took photos and saved the bills for cleaning, pest treatment, and the coffee machine repair. I also found takeout receipts suggesting Greg hadn’t stayed alone. At dinner, he casually asked if he could use our guest room again, calling our place his “free hotel.” That was when I showed him what his last stay had cost us.

Greg admitted he’d invited four friends over without asking and had left the mess for us to handle. We told him he could choose whether to repay the costs, but we couldn’t offer him the apartment again unless we could trust him with it. He apologized and paid.

Months later, Greg asked to stay again. This time, he left the apartment clean, with fresh coffee and a note beside the new machine: “Still works. I checked.”
