My Elderly Neighbor Died — After His Funeral, I Received a Letter From Him Revealing He’d Buried a Secret in His Backyard 40 Years Ago

After my elderly neighbor, Mr. Whitmore, died, he left me a letter telling me to dig beneath the apple tree in his yard. I expected an old secret. I found a photograph of him holding me as a newborn—and a letter saying he was my father.

For 38 years, my mother had told me my father abandoned us. Mr. Whitmore wrote that her family had forced them apart. Years later, he moved next door to be close to me, but neither of them told me the truth while he was alive.

When I confronted my mother, she admitted she had kept him out of my life. She apologized, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the years we’d lost. I finally knew who my father was, only after it was too late to know him.
