‘Keep It Down or Get Out!’ a Passenger Told My 7-Year-Old Autistic Grandson – Then the Flight Attendant Asked for My Boarding Pass

ears, rocked in his seat, and held tight to the little blue airplane that had belonged to his late grandfather, Daniel. A passenger across the aisle snapped, “Keep it down or get out!” The flight attendant helped Benjamin with earplugs and told the man to leave him alone.

Then the toy fell to the floor. The attendant picked it up, saw the faded airline logo, and asked for my boarding pass. Moments later, the captain came out of the cockpit and recognized Daniel’s name.

Daniel had trained him years ago. After a frightening flight, the young pilot had struggled with turbulence, and Daniel had used that very toy to help him focus on what the aircraft was actually doing. The captain also told me something I’d never known: Daniel had retired from flying so he could help our daughter through a difficult time.

When the rude passenger complained again, the captain firmly told him to stop. Later, he invited Benjamin to see the cockpit. As we left, Benjamin clutched his grandfather’s airplane and said, “I’m going to fly again.”
