A Cafe Owner Kicked Me and My Old Chihuahua Out of His ‘Pet-Friendly’ Cafe Because I Only Ordered Coffee – Then One Stranger Walked in and Asked Him a Question That Made Him Go Pale
At 74, I lived carefully on Social Security after losing my husband, Frank. On what would have been our 47th anniversary, I visited his grave with Benny, my 14-year-old blind Chihuahua.
Afterward, I felt dizzy from skipping lunch, so I entered a café with a “Dogs Welcome” sign and ordered coffee.
The owner, Christopher, claimed customers with dogs had to spend at least $30. When I pointed to another dog inside, he replied, “Your dog is old, unattractive, and bad for the atmosphere.”
Humiliated, I picked up Benny and headed for the door. When the room began spinning, an older stranger caught my arm.
Christopher called after us, “She was just leaving with her ugly dog.”
The stranger turned. “Christopher, does the name Victoria mean anything to you?”
Christopher went pale. The man was Steven, the father of his fiancée, who had come to meet the man his daughter planned to marry.
Christopher immediately offered me food and water for Benny, but the waitress revealed there was no $30 rule. He had invented it because he didn’t consider me a valuable customer.
When Victoria arrived and learned what happened, she admitted she had warned Christopher before about judging people by their appearance and money. Steven also withdrew his plan to invest in the café.
Victoria removed her engagement ring. “I can’t build a life with someone who decides who deserves respect based on what they can offer.”
“You’ve cost me everything!” Christopher shouted at me.
“No,” I replied. “I only ordered coffee. You chose everything that came after.”
Before leaving, I pointed to the “Dogs Welcome” sign. “If you keep that sign, mean it.”
The next morning, I returned to Frank’s grave with Benny.
“I stood up for myself yesterday,” I whispered. “I think you’d be proud of me.”
