A Romantic Weekend That Ended With Three Chilling Words

My boyfriend surprised me with a weekend getaway at a luxury hotel, and I thought it was one of the most romantic things anyone had ever done for me. The suite was beautiful, he held my hand everywhere we went, and he kept telling me how much I meant to him. For two days, everything felt perfect.
Then we reached the reception desk to check out. He handed over his card with a smile, but the receptionist looked up and said it had been declined. His face flushed as he muttered something about a bank error. I didn’t want to embarrass him, so I quietly gave her my card and paid for the stay.
He thanked me and kissed my forehead. We were almost out the door when the receptionist caught my eye and leaned closer. “Be careful,” she whispered, just low enough that he couldn’t hear.
I stopped cold. The look on her face made it feel like more than a warning about a declined card. Had she seen him at the hotel before? Was there something about our romantic getaway I didn’t know? I followed him outside, trying to act normal, but her words stayed with me all the way home.
