I found an old VHS tape with a note!
While my mom was in the hospital, Dad and I went to collect her belongings. Inside her safe, I found an old VHS tape with a note that read, “DON’T SHOW LUCY.” I’m Lucy—so I secretly played it.
My late grandfather appeared on the screen and told me to dig beneath the old oak tree by the creek. There, I uncovered a metal box filled with love letters and a sapphire ring belonging to Eleanor, the woman he had loved before marrying my grandmother.
When I confronted Grandma, she admitted she had always known. “He loved Eleanor, but he also chose to build a beautiful life with me,” she explained. “Love isn’t always simple.”
I returned the letters to the tree but kept the ring as a reminder: some stories aren’t meant to be changed—only understood. Sometimes, making peace with the past is the only way to embrace the present.
