I unfolded the receipt with shaking hands. Instead of a total, two words were scrawled across the bottom:
“He’s married.”
I looked up just as he was rushing toward the door, avoiding my eyes. The waitress gave me a sympathetic nod. I walked away without another word, grateful a stranger had saved me from someone who never intended to tell the truth.
