I Promised My Niece I’d Pay for Her Wedding Dress but Immediately Changed My Mind after Overhearing Her Phone Call

After my niece lost her parents, I promised I’d one day buy her wedding dress. Nearly 20 years later, she reminded me of that promise—but the dresses she wanted cost up to $7,500, far beyond what I could afford. I offered $1,500 instead, hoping we could find something beautiful within budget.

Days later, I overheard her admitting she planned to take my money, sell the dress, and use the cash for wedding expenses and her fiancé’s car repairs after already spending her late parents’ trust fund. Heartbroken by the deception, I refused to pay for the dress or the wedding.

She and her fiancé quietly married at the courthouse without me. I still love my niece, but her betrayal taught me that trust, once broken, is difficult to rebuild—even with family.
