After his mother died, my son struggled to sleep at night—until one evening, I happened to overhear what my wife softly said to him.

Three weeks after my ex-wife died in a car accident, my 14-year-old son Jake began struggling with severe grief and nightly nightmares. Each night, I stayed close to him so he wouldn’t feel alone, believing he needed support more than space. My current wife disagreed, saying I was “babying” him and needed to stop. One night, I overheard her speaking to Jake in a harsh, dismissive way, suggesting he was exaggerating his grief and putting pressure on our marriage.

I told her she couldn’t speak to him that way. She accused me of choosing my son over her, and that same night she left. In the aftermath, I stayed with Jake as he finally rested peacefully. It made one thing clear: my priority will always be my son, especially when he is grieving, and anyone who cannot respect that doesn’t belong in our home.
