THE GRADUATION SPEECH THAT BROKE MY HEART

I raised my stepson Marcus for 14 years, loving and supporting him as my own. At his high school graduation, he thanked his dad and stepmother for helping him succeed—but never mentioned me.

After the ceremony, I told him I was proud of him and quietly left. Later, he accused me of ruining his day and reminded me that I wasn’t his “real mom.”

The real heartbreak wasn’t being left out of a speech—it was realizing I had been erased from the story of a child I helped raise and loved for most of his life.
