Blood blisters are usually harmless skin injuries caused by friction or minor trauma, where blood gets trapped under the skin instead of breaking the surface. They often look alarming due to their dark red or purple color, but most heal on their own within one to two weeks.

In most cases, they should not be popped, as the skin protects against infection. Keeping the area clean and avoiding pressure helps healing.

However, recurring, unexplained, or infected blood blisters may signal an underlying health issue and should be checked by a healthcare professional.
