THE DAY I LEARNED WHY MY FATHER ALWAYS TIPPED TOO MUCH

Growing up, I used to be embarrassed by my father’s habit of leaving huge tips at restaurants—often 40% or more, even though we weren’t wealthy. I thought it was careless, but after he passed away, I learned the truth behind his quiet generosity.

At his favorite diner, a waitress recognized his photo and revealed that he had secretly helped her as a homeless teen. Every visit, he left her $100 tips with notes that said, “For your future,” helping her pay for school and eventually become a manager.

In that moment, I realized my father wasn’t reckless with money—he was changing lives in silence. Now I tip the same way, finally understanding his words: “You never know what someone’s carrying.”
