Officials Share Next Steps as Hantavirus Cruise Ship Outbreak Cases Continue to Rise

A cruise ship operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, the MV Hondius, has been linked to a serious hantavirus outbreak after departing Ushuaia with 149 people onboard.
Health officials confirmed 8 cases and 3 deaths so far, with passengers from multiple countries receiving urgent medical care, including evacuations to the Netherlands.
While the WHO says the overall global risk remains low, investigations are ongoing as experts monitor potential new infections and trace contacts.
The ship is expected to arrive at the Canary Islands, where all passengers will undergo medical screening and evacuation procedures.
💔 A developing outbreak that has raised global health concern—but officials stress it is not a COVID-19–like pandemic threat.
