WHO Provides Clear Update on Hantavirus and Safely Addresses Pandemic Concerns

Health officials are closely monitoring a hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius after multiple severe infections and three reported deaths. Around 150 passengers and crew members remain under medical observation as international health agencies work together to contain the situation.

The World Health Organization says the overall global risk remains low and stresses that this is not another COVID-style pandemic. Experts explain that hantavirus is rare and usually linked to exposure to infected rodents, while person-to-person spread is considered extremely uncommon.

Scientists are still investigating how the virus may have spread onboard, as no rodents have yet been found on the ship. Officials continue urging the public to stay calm, follow trusted health updates, and avoid fear-driven misinformation online.
