Sometimes Dealbreakers Aren’t What They Seem

After weeks of chatting with a guy on a dating app, I finally agreed to meet him in person. Our conversations had been amazing—we had similar humor, great chemistry, and everything felt surprisingly natural.

When we met, he looked just like his photos and was very polite and easy to talk to. But there was one unexpected detail: his scent was extremely strong, to the point it became distracting during our date.

Even so, we continued talking, laughing, and enjoying the evening. I didn’t want to judge too quickly, so by the end of the date I gently asked about it.

He laughed and admitted he had likely overdone his cologne because he was nervous and wanted to make a good impression.

In that moment, everything shifted. What I saw as a “flaw” was actually just anxiety and effort—someone trying too hard to show up well.

We ended the date on good terms, and while it may not turn into romance, I walked away with an important reminder: sometimes what seems like a red flag is just human nervousness in disguise.
