Federal Officials Announce Details of a Major Arrest

A federal agent was struck when a desperate driver tried to flee a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint—and now the driver has been sentenced, raising tough questions about risk and accountability.

On August 1, 2023, 26-year-old Kevin Dominguez’s car was stopped on U.S. Highway 57 after a Border Patrol dog signaled trouble in the trunk. Inside, agents found an undocumented person. In a split-second decision, Dominguez reversed, striking an agent, and sped away—endangering both lives.

He was quickly arrested and charged with assaulting a federal officer and illegally transporting a person. The officer recovered, and Dominguez was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison plus supervised release. The case highlights the dangers at checkpoints and the serious consequences of risking lives to evade the law.
