The Firing That Saved Me

I was fired without warning after six years on the job—humiliated, shaking, and angry. My boss told me not to “make it harder,” and I left, convinced he was cruel. I cried the whole drive home.

Days later, the truth came out: the company declared bankruptcy. The CEO was arrested, retirement funds vanished, and 52 employees lost everything—except me.

Then I received a handwritten letter from my former boss. He had known for months but couldn’t warn anyone without risking arrest. He let me go because I was the most vulnerable—a single mom with no safety net—so I wouldn’t lose everything.

I spent days hating him, only to realize he sacrificed his own job and pension to protect me. Sometimes what feels like betrayal is actually an act of quiet, life-saving kindness.
