How to Stay Warm and Safe During a Winter Power Outage

When the power goes out in winter, the house can get cold fast. The key isn’t panic—it’s conserving heat and limiting loss.

Start by shrinking your space. Close off unused rooms and focus on one main area. Block drafts with rolled towels or blankets under doors, and cover windows with thick curtains, blankets, or plastic to keep cold air out and warmth in.

Next, protect your body heat. Dress in layers, wear wool socks and a hat, and use blankets or sleeping bags. Sit close to others to share warmth, and insulate yourself from cold floors with extra padding. Warm (not hot) water bottles can help at night.

Finally, stay safe. Never use ovens, grills, or charcoal indoors. Only use approved heaters with proper ventilation. Eat regular meals, drink warm fluids, and check on everyone in the home.

With calm planning and simple adjustments, a winter power outage is manageable—preparedness and safety make all the difference.
