New UCSF Study Shows High-Flavanol Cocoa May Double Circulating Stem Cells and Improve Blood Vessel Health in Just 30 Days

A UCSF clinical study suggests that drinking high-flavanol cocoa twice daily for 30 days may significantly support heart health and regenerative function. Participants saw a doubling of circulating stem cells and a 47% boost in endothelial function, a key marker of healthy blood vessels, circulation, and blood pressure.
Researchers credit epicatechin, a cocoa flavonoid that increases nitric oxide, improves blood flow, reduces oxidative stress, and supports tissue repair. Importantly, benefits came from specially prepared, minimally processed high-flavanol cocoa, not typical commercial chocolate products.
While the trial was small and preliminary, it adds to growing evidence linking flavanol-rich cocoa to cardiovascular wellness, vascular flexibility, and metabolic health. Experts stress cocoa isn’t a medical treatment, but organic, unalkalized high-flavanol cocoa may be a beneficial addition to a heart-healthy lifestyle alongside diet, exercise, and medical care.
