I Hired a Sweet Nanny for My 6-Year-Old Son – Then I Saw a Tattoo on Her Arm That Made My Heart Race Because It Revealed Who She Really Was

I thought our new nanny was hiding something from my six-year-old son. Then I saw the musical notes tattooed on her arm—and recognized a lullaby I’d written as a child.

Helen had become Andrew’s favorite person, but one day he grew quiet around her. “She stole our song,” he told me. She had sung the lullaby I used to sing to him, a melody I’d never published or performed. When I asked Helen how she knew it, she refused to explain.

Searching through my adoption records, I discovered a name I’d forgotten: Rachel, my older biological sister. We had lived together in a children’s home until I was adopted at eight. Rachel had stayed behind, and we’d lost contact for 32 years.

Helen was Rachel. She’d begun using her middle name, and neither of us recognized the other when she applied to be Andrew’s nanny. After Andrew mentioned the song, she realized who I was but was afraid to tell me. The tattoo held the first notes of our childhood melody—the memory of me she’d carried all those years.

When Andrew asked whose song it really was, I looked at Helen and said, “Ours.”
