At least 33 people were killed and nearly 20 injured after a passenger bus crashed into a ravine while traveling to Lima, Peru, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

The León Express bus, en route from Huánuco, veered off the central highway at kilometer 72, struck a hillside, and plunged more than 100 meters into a ravine, coming to rest near the Rímac River. The crash occurred in the early morning hours.

Peru’s National Police initially reported 17 fatalities, but the number rose as rescue efforts continued. Highway Police Chief Colonel Manuel Lozana confirmed the death toll had climbed to 33, making it one of the deadliest road accidents in the region this year.
