My 6-year-old son, Micah, and I were eating at the mall when he noticed an older janitor who looked tired and sad. His name tag said \u201cFrank.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy does he look so sad?\u201d Micah asked.
\u201cMaybe he\u2019s having a hard day,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Micah walked straight over, offered Frank his cookie, and gently asked, \u201cDo you miss your dad?\u201d
Frank broke down crying. He hugged Micah and later told us his 9-year-old son, James, had died two years earlier. Micah held his hand and said, \u201cWe carry people in our hearts when they\u2019re gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two Weeks Later<\/strong><\/p>\n

Micah wanted to go back. This time, Frank came over smiling with a visitor badge.
\u201cI told my boss I need Thursdays at noon free,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

From then on, Thursdays became our tradition\u2014stories, cookies, and quiet company. Frank slowly became family.<\/p>\n

At Micah\u2019s 7th birthday, Frank arrived with a book.

Frank looked at me, emotional.
