Mrs. Midge came out with her old college guitar. Her husband followed with a tambourine, and soon the Thompsons brought a pair of bongo drums. Within minutes, half the neighborhood was gathered on my lawn, instruments in hand, ready to play.<\/p>\n

Lux turned to me with a grin. \u201cCome on, Mom. Let\u2019s give him a concert he\u2019ll never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hesitated, then sat at my piano by the open window. My fingers trembled as I began to play Moon River<\/em>. Slowly, the others joined in \u2014 offbeat, out of tune, but full of heart. Laughter and music filled the street.<\/p>\n

Curtains shifted in Duval\u2019s house. He peeked out, face pale with disbelief, as our little impromptu orchestra played on.<\/p>\n

When the song ended, the crowd erupted in cheers. I looked around, tears in my eyes, realizing the silence that once haunted my home had been replaced by laughter, music, and warmth.<\/p>\n

Duval\u2019s blinds closed tight, and he never complained again.<\/p>\n

Now, every Sunday afternoon, our street fills with music. Some play, others hum along. And when I sit at that piano, I still play for Arvid \u2014 but now, I also play for a neighborhood that reminded me kindness can always drown out cruelty.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
