Years ago, my wife and I were stranded at 2 AM after our car broke down on a deserted highway. A college student stopped, drove us to town, and refused our money with a smile. \u201cHappy to help,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

We never forgot his kindness. Years later, my wife called me in tears. \u201cTurn on the news,\u201d she said. There he was\u2014the same young man\u2014Zayd Nouri<\/strong>, now the newly elected mayor<\/strong> of our city. The headline read: \u201cFormer Foster Kid Becomes Mayor Against All Odds.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Then it hit me\u2014I\u2019d unknowingly been the inspector who filed the complaint that shut down the tutoring center where he once worked. I went to City Hall to apologize. He recognized me instantly. \u201cYou\u2019re the couple from Route 9,\u201d he said, smiling.<\/p>\n
