My kids were babies when my mom died. I told them she was in the sky, watching us. Now they\u2019re five, old enough to ask questions. Every year on her birthday, we visit her grave with yellow daisies and take a photo \u201cto show Nana we came.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year, we found a small wooden box tucked beneath the flowers. Inside\u2014old photos and a letter:<\/p>\n

\u201cTo the one who loved her most,
I couldn\u2019t say it back then.

The photos showed my mom, young and smiling, pregnant\u2014standing with a man I didn\u2019t recognize. Not my dad.<\/p>\n

I called Aunt Sylvia. After a pause, she said, \u201cHis name was Jonah. Your mom\u2019s first love.\u201d<\/p>\n

He disappeared before I was born. Years later, sick and fading, he sent her those photos. She kept them hidden and read the letter every birthday.<\/p>\n
