No nurse, no chart, no adult in sight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, buddy,\u201d I asked gently. \u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t answer\u2014just kept watching the ceiling. Calm. Too calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you lost?\u201d I pressed.<\/p>\n<p>He finally turned to me with a faint smile. \u201cI\u2019m not lost. I\u2019m waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor who?\u201d I asked, confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you to ask the right question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hairs on my neck stood up. I checked the system\u2014no record, no admission. Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I told the charge nurse. \u201cThere\u2019s a kid alone in Room 3. No file, no guardian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked surprised but followed me. I half-expected the room to be empty\u2014but he was still there, exactly as I\u2019d left him.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw her face go pale.
