I left the note on the kitchen counter. When my husband, Lyle, saw it, his face fell. He admitted he\u2019d had a fling years ago on a business trip\u2014said it \u201conly happened twice.\u201d He kept the note, he claimed, to remind himself of what he almost lost. That didn\u2019t sit right. He didn\u2019t lose anything. He made a choice\u2014and kept a souvenir.<\/em><\/p>\n

Days passed in silence. I reached out to my best friend, who admitted she\u2019d always sensed something off. Eventually, I found Corinne\u2019s number on a crumpled receipt in the same box.
