My teenage daughter, who lives with her father and stepmother, called me crying last night. She\u2019s 16, and apparently, she\u2019s been told she has to take the night shift with their newborn. Her stepmother told her, \u201cYou can\u2019t live here for free\u2014you have to earn your keep.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n I was furious. But instead of reacting on emotion, I contacted Child Protective Services (CPS) and arranged for an unannounced welfare check. CPS spoke with everyone, including my daughter, but concluded there wasn\u2019t enough to act on.<\/p>\n My ex was livid. And to my surprise, my daughter also felt I went too far.<\/p>\n Now I\u2019m torn. I don\u2019t regret trying to protect her, but I\u2019m worried I made things harder for her at home. Still, I can\u2019t help but feel it\u2019s wrong for a teenager to be expected to care for an infant all night\u2014especially when she\u2019s balancing school.<\/p>\n I\u2019m struggling to find the line between protecting her and respecting her world.
