Six years ago, Brian married Melissa. She was always polite but distant\u2014never called me \u201cMom,\u201d just \u201cCarol.\u201d Visits felt like a courtesy. I adored my grandkids, Lily and Sam, but rarely saw them.<\/p>\n
Then one day, Melissa texted, \u201cHi Mom! Just checking in. How\u2019s your back?\u201d She brought banana bread and hugged me, calling me \u201cMom\u201d again. It felt almost real.<\/p>\n
At Brian\u2019s birthday, I overheard Melissa on the phone: \u201cI know it\u2019s fake… She\u2019s such a witch… We\u2019ll get her to sign the equity transfer using the grandkids… Then she can rot in that ugly little apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n
