In the unit with other babies, an overwhelmed mom of healthy newborn\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/news\/4-year-old-twins-suffocate-in-wooden-toy-chest\/\">twins<\/a>\u00a0innocently told Smith that she was \u201cso lucky\u201d to not have two babies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Crushed by the words, the new mom couldn\u2019t find the words to explain her loss. Then, she realized that Skye\u2019s legacy was to help other families who lose a child, and it came in the form of a purple butterfly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In November 2015 Millie Smith and partner Lewis Cann found out they were having their first Child. Smith, who has twins in the family, said she had a \u201cgut feeling\u201d about having a duo and 10 weeks later, doctors confirmed she was expecting identical twin girls.<\/p>\n<p>Less than two weeks after the excitement of knowing they would double the children in their home, the British couple were devastated to learn that one of their babies had a fatal condition and wouldn\u2019t survive after birth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the scan, the doctor didn\u2019t say anything. I was very excited and loved seeing the little babies, but she was silent. Both Lewis and I immediately knew there must be a problem,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/parents\/why-hidden-meaning-purple-butterfly-so-important-nicu-parents-t100318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Smith said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors shared the news that one of the babies had anencephaly, which according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/birthdefects\/anencephaly.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CDC<\/a>) affects about one in 4,600 babies across the U.S. It\u2019s a serious birth defect where a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull, and \u201calmost all babies born with anencephaly will die shortly after birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe id=\"instagram-embed-0\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B2kYoxdHsp4\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=640&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fen.newsner.com&amp;rp=%2Fnews%2Fif-you-see-a-purple-butterfly-sticker-near-a-newborn-you-need-to-know-what-it-means%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwY2xjawFVLGVleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHbw8vdIOFxBZzcBIqKqAaDiU_G-tXuqhG11YEjKxV8HLkH7nkP9z2aEb5g_aem_0xGPCTD_A#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A1618.6000000238419%7D\" height=\"1024\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Knowing that one baby would die soon after birth, and that there were risks involved for their other baby, the couple decided to move forward with the extremely high-risk pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next several months, Smith and Cann named their twins Skye and Callie. \u201cWe knew that Skye needed to have a name before she was born,\u201d Smith said. \u201cKnowing she would only survive for seconds or minutes, I wanted her to be named during that time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The meaning behind \u201cSkye,\u201d she explained \u201cwas somewhere we knew she would always be, that we could look up at the sky and remember our baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Smith went into labor after only 30 weeks on April 30, she needed an emergency C-section. To help navigate the loss, the couple had a \u201cbereavement midwife\u201d during the birth, and they were put I a special room the called the \u201cDaisy Room,\u201d where families can spend time with a baby before and after she\/he passes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the girls were born, they both cried. This was a huge moment, as we were told that Skye would not make a noise or move,\u201d said Smith, who was thankful to have three hours with Skye before she died. \u201cWe were cuddling Skye when she passed away. This was the worst moment in our lives. I have never ever felt heartbreak like that before. After about four weeks, everyone acted as though nothing had happened, meaning the families around me had no idea about our situation,\u201d Smith recalled.<\/p>\n<p>One morning, a stressed mother whose twins were also in NICU, harmlessly said to Smith that she was \u201cso lucky\u201d to not have twins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of the other parents knew what had happened or anything about Skye. The comment was completely innocent and more out of humor\u2026They weren\u2019t to know that I did at one point have two.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usefultipsforhome.com\/life-tips\/important-story-behind-butterfly-sticker\/?fbclid=IwAR3-RY7OFozgpRIBxgIEhDus5zMnTnb2LIGbW0lJNyNCA9ohQa0NISRLKEg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Smith continued<\/a>, \u201cBut the comment nearly broke me. I ran out [of] the room in tears and they had no idea why. I didn\u2019t have the heart to tell them what had happened. A simple sticker would have avoided that entire situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was in that moment Smith realized she had to create something that would speak for parents who had just lost a baby, ensuring the misunderstanding never happens again.<\/p>\n<p>She designed a poster for the NICU explaining both hospital personnel and visitors that any incubator with a purple butterfly on it means that one or more babies, in a set of multiples were lost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose butterflies, as I felt it was fitting to remember the babies that flew away, the color purple because it is suitable for both boys or girls,\u201d said Smith.<\/p>\n<p>The purple butterfly concept\u2013now under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheSkyeHighFoundation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Skye High Foundation<\/a>\u2013has spread to hospitals in several countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Callie is now a lively, happy seven-year-old, and twin\u2019s memory lives in purple butterfly cards along with other initiatives to help families with babies like Skye all over the world. The purple butterflies now come in numerous forms, like ornaments, cards, blankets, stuffed animals and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately I will never be able to stop this from happening but the more support groups we can set up and put things in place like the stickers the better it will be.
