Emily sat across from her son Dean, the glow of the restaurant lights casting a soft hue over the table. She had worked so hard to get him to come\u2014offering his late grandfather\u2019s watch just for a quiet dinner together. But now he barely looked up from his phone.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is nice,\u201d she said, hopeful.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah,\u201d Dean muttered, glancing toward the bathroom. \u201cGuess they had to seat us here because of your wheelchair.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily winced but stayed silent, trying again: \u201cHow\u2019s school?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFine. Whatever,\u201d Dean replied, rolling his eyes.<\/p>\n
She reached for her water, but her shaking hand knocked it over. The glass shattered, and all eyes turned. Dean snapped, \u201cSeriously, Mom? You can\u2019t even eat without making a scene!\u201d<\/p>\n
Before she could respond, a deep voice cut through the silence: \u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n
A man approached\u2014Mr. Harris, the restaurant owner. \u201cI heard what you said. My mother passed away years ago, and I\u2019d give anything for one more dinner with her. She raised me alone, disabled too, but strong. And now I run this place because of her.\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked at Dean. \u201cYou still have your mother. Treat her like the gift she is\u2014before it\u2019s too late.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dean froze. Emily wept quietly. And then, Dean stood, knelt beside her, and took her hands. \u201cI\u2019m so sorry, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n
She cupped his face, whispering, \u201cOh, Dean.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Harris smiled. \u201cFood\u2019s on the way. Don\u2019t worry about the glass.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dean put his phone away. \u201cSo… there\u2019s this one professor at school\u2014totally crazy, but you\u2019d love him.\u201d<\/p>\n
