Then she invited me to lunch with her daughter\u2014my first-ever restaurant meal.<\/p>\n<p>Her generosity turned an embarrassing moment into a Christmas memory I would treasure forever. Her daughter and I became close friends, and at 24, we\u2019re still friends despite living in different towns.<\/p>\n<p>Today, my family is financially stable, and every Christmas I help a child in need. That mother\u2019s act of kindness gave me more than presents: she made me feel included without making me ashamed of being poor.
