When I was ten, my childhood dog scratched at our back door—two years after Dad told me she had died. Biscuit was thin, filthy, and exhausted, but I recognized her instantly. While Mom and I cried with joy, Dad’s face went pale. He knew she had been alive all along.

As Biscuit recovered, she led us through the woods to an empty house. Inside were her bowls, photographs, and drawings of her with an elderly woman and a little girl. Confronted with the evidence, Dad finally admitted the truth: while I was at summer camp, he had given Biscuit to Martha, a woman with failing eyesight who was raising her granddaughter, Lily. He believed they needed her more, then lied about her death.

Mom discovered that Martha had recently died and Lily had entered foster care. When Lily visited us, Biscuit rushed into her arms. Lily explained that she had opened the gate after being told Biscuit couldn’t come with her, hoping the dog would find someone who loved her.

I was still hurt by Dad’s betrayal, but Lily wasn’t to blame. She had lost her grandmother, her home, and Biscuit. Soon, we became friends, sharing our love for the dog who had comforted us both.

Biscuit stayed with me, and Lily kept visiting. Dad finally understood that good intentions didn’t excuse taking away our choices. My dog’s unexpected return revealed a painful family secret—and brought me a friendship I never expected.
