For weeks, a crying baby kept me awake in my apartment. I was already exhausted from living with a chronic illness, and earplugs and white noise weren\u2019t helping. One night at 2 a.m., I wrote a note to the mother: \u201cYour baby. Your problem. Keep the noise inside.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was about to leave it at her door when I heard her crying. \u201cI\u2019m trying,\u201d she whispered. Her partner had left, and she was afraid she couldn\u2019t care for the baby alone. I looked at the note in my hand, tore it up, and knocked instead.<\/p>\n
