At 74, I lived carefully on Social Security after losing my husband, Frank. On what would have been our 47th anniversary, I visited his grave with Benny, my 14-year-old blind Chihuahua.<\/p>\n

Afterward, I felt dizzy from skipping lunch, so I entered a caf\u00e9 with a \u201cDogs Welcome\u201d sign and ordered coffee.<\/p>\n

The owner, Christopher, claimed customers with dogs had to spend at least $30. When I pointed to another dog inside, he replied, \u201cYour dog is old, unattractive, and bad for the atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Humiliated, I picked up Benny and headed for the door. When the room began spinning, an older stranger caught my arm.<\/p>\n

Christopher called after us, \u201cShe was just leaving with her ugly dog.\u201d<\/p>\n

The stranger turned. \u201cChristopher, does the name Victoria mean anything to you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Christopher went pale. The man was Steven, the father of his fianc\u00e9e, who had come to meet the man his daughter planned to marry.<\/p>\n

Christopher immediately offered me food and water for Benny, but the waitress revealed there was no $30 rule. He had invented it because he didn\u2019t consider me a valuable customer.<\/p>\n

When Victoria arrived and learned what happened, she admitted she had warned Christopher before about judging people by their appearance and money. Steven also withdrew his plan to invest in the caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Victoria removed her engagement ring. \u201cI can\u2019t build a life with someone who decides who deserves respect based on what they can offer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve cost me everything!\u201d Christopher shouted at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I replied. \u201cI only ordered coffee. You chose everything that came after.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before leaving, I pointed to the \u201cDogs Welcome\u201d sign. \u201cIf you keep that sign, mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, I returned to Frank\u2019s grave with Benny.<\/p>\n
