But when I arrived, his wife met me at the door and told me to \u201cget lost.\u201d I looked to my son, hoping he would say something. He stood there in silence.<\/p>\n

I could have argued or asked why I was being turned away from a party I had arranged. Instead, I canceled the reservation and left. What hurt most wasn\u2019t the money or the ruined plans. It was realizing that my son had watched me be rejected and chosen not to speak.<\/p>\n

I called my closest friends and took them out for a celebration instead.
