Every Sunday, Mom hosted family dinner. After Dad died three years ago, those meals helped us feel close to him. So when she texted, \u201cPlease don\u2019t come today,\u201d my brother and I drove straight to her house.<\/p>\n

Mom didn\u2019t answer the door. We let ourselves in and found a man sitting at the kitchen table who looked so much like Dad that we froze. Mom stood nearby, crying.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is James,\u201d she said. \u201cYour father\u2019s twin brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

We had never known Dad had a brother. Mom explained that she and James had once been close, but he disappeared before she married Dad. Years later, Dad learned the truth and insisted James stay out of their lives. Now James had returned, hoping to meet the family he had missed.<\/p>\n

My brother and I asked him to leave. Then we stayed with Mom, listening as she talked about Dad and the life they had built together. We skipped the usual Sunday dinner and shared pizza and tea instead.<\/p>\n
