At\u00a0just 19\u00a0years old, Catrin Pugh was busy planning her future. However, in\u00a0April 2013, her\u00a0life<\/a>\u00a0changed drastically when the bus she was traveling on\u00a0after a\u00a0vacation in\u00a0the French Alps crashed. She sustained burns over\u00a096% of\u00a0her body, and doctors gave her only a\u00a01% chance of\u00a0survival.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Catrin Pugh<\/a>, born and raised in\u00a0North Wales, UK, was a\u00a0typical teenager with a\u00a0love for travel and adventure. In\u00a0April 2013, on\u00a0a\u00a0bright spring day in\u00a0the French Alps, she was heading back to\u00a0Britain after the ski season had ended. At\u00a019, she boarded a\u00a0coach on\u00a0a\u00a0route known for its steep descent and 21\u00a0challenging hairpin bends. As\u00a0they approached the 20th bend, Catrin\u2019s sense of\u00a0calm was abruptly broken when she overheard the driver quietly say, \u201cI\u2019ve got no\u00a0brakes!\u201d The words were quickly followed by\u00a0a\u00a0panicked shout.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYou could feel the coach freewheeling, soaring,\u201d\u00a0says<\/a>\u00a0Catrin. \u201cThere was screaming and shouting, people breaking windows, some managed to\u00a0jump off.\u201d Catrin immediately thought about her parents. \u201cI\u2019m really sorry, Mum and Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0could see the drop in\u00a0front of\u00a0us and then the driver turned the wheel in\u00a0time\u00a0\u2014 which is\u00a0why we\u2019re still here,\u201d says Catrin. However, they collided with the rocks on\u00a0the opposite side of\u00a0the bend. Maurice Wrightson, the driver and the sole fatality among the 52\u00a0people aboard, was later posthumously awarded the Queen\u2019s Commendation for Bravery in\u00a0recognition of\u00a0his actions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Pugh was trapped in\u00a0the burning\u00a0bus<\/a>, suffering severe burns to\u00a0her face, arms, legs, and torso. She was airlifted to\u00a0a\u00a0hospital in\u00a0Grenoble, France, where doctors gave her only a\u00a01% chance of\u00a0survival<\/strong>. The only areas untouched by\u00a0the flames were the\u00a0soles<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0her feet and a\u00a0few patches on\u00a0her scalp.<\/p>\n

Treating Catrin\u2019s injuries\u00a0proved<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0an\u00a0extraordinary challenge. With no\u00a0skin left to\u00a0protect her from infection, she required immediate and multiple skin grafts. Normally, this procedure involves taking skin from other areas of\u00a0the body, but due to\u00a0the extent of\u00a0her burns, Catrin\u2019s condition was too severe. Skin was taken from her scalp, allowed to\u00a0heal, and then harvested again\u2014requiring a\u00a0total of\u00a0five procedures. Additionally, skin from the legs of\u00a0her brother and mother was used, leading to\u00a0both of\u00a0them being hospitalized for two weeks each.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
