Tragedy Off Roatán: What We Know About the Fatal Island Flight

 

A routine flight from Roatán Island turned tragic when a small passenger plane crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff off the coast of Honduras. Witnesses reported the aircraft struggling moments after departure before going down near the shoreline, triggering an immediate emergency response.

Honduras’ transport ministry said the Lanhsa Airlines flight was carrying 14 passengers and three crew members on a domestic route to La Ceiba. Authorities later confirmed multiple fatalities, including two children and foreign nationals, as rescue and recovery efforts continued.

Among those killed was Aurelio Martínez, a renowned Garifuna musician known for bringing his culture’s music to international audiences. Tributes poured in from across the cultural and music communities, honoring his legacy.

Investigators are now examining weather conditions, aircraft maintenance, and pilot communications to determine the cause of the crash. Officials have pledged a full investigation while providing support to the affected families and communities.
