At least 33 people were killed and nearly 20 injured after a passenger bus crashed and plunged into a deep ravine on Peru’s central highway while traveling to Lima. The fatal accident occurred early Tuesday morning at kilometer 72, involving a León Express bus en route from Huánuco in the central jungle region.
Authorities said the bus struck a hillside before falling more than 100 meters into a ravine, coming to rest just meters from the Rímac River. The National Police initially reported 17 deaths, but the toll rose throughout the day. According to Highway Police Chief Colonel Manuel Lozana, the confirmed death count has now reached 33.
