Sixteen years ago, my son Mark proudly bought a small home for his wife Melissa and their daughter Emma. He dreamed of expanding it someday—but he died in a construction accident when Emma was only two. At the funeral, Melissa walked out on her daughter, handed me the house keys, and vanished with another man. I took Emma in and raised her myself.
Years later, for her prom, Emma sadly said we couldn’t afford a dress. After my shift, I sewed her a simple blue gown. She loved it—until Melissa suddenly showed up after sixteen years, glamorous and smiling, with a designer dress in hand.
