My Mom Always Controlled My Entire Life, but What She Did to Ruin My Wedding Crossed the Line

Growing up, my mom controlled every part of my life—my clothes, friends, even my college. When I discovered she had hidden my acceptance letter to NYU just to keep me from leaving, I was heartbroken but stayed, sacrificing my dreams for her. Dating was nearly impossible under her watchful eye—she once called the police on my boyfriend, claiming he kidnapped me.
Eventually, she introduced me to Colin, and we fell in love. But as we planned our wedding, she took over everything, from the guest list to my dress. When we told her we planned to move out together, she faked a serious illness to stop us. We canceled the wedding and spent all our savings on her care—only to later find out she was perfectly healthy.
I confronted her, and she confessed: she faked everything out of fear of being alone. That was the final straw. I packed my bags and left with Colin. I don’t know if I’ll cut ties forever, but for the first time, I chose me.
